Hard quarter, watery mastitis, fever
Hello, I am having a pretty severe problem with cows getting watery mastitis that has A LOT of globs that are very difficult to strip out. They have very hard quarters and are running fevers. My vet said they have e-coli and has been able to bring down the fever on some but they are still sick and still have mastitis. Nothing is working. My neighbor mentioned these products but is new to using them and didn't know what to use for this problem. Does anyone have any idea on what to use? I need to take care of this ASAP.
It looks like you were late to the party by maybe a couple hours. I just got an email from Synergy that in the process of removing spam accounts some non-spam accounts were accidentally deleted...including the forum posts. There was a post about this that I was involved in. My account and my posts were deleted along with a lot of other posts. I can certainly help though!
Best thing to do since they are also sick is to use about 20-30cc Somaticare in the infected quarter for 3 milkings in a row. While you are doing that, also give about 20-30cc excell 7000 in the mouth 2-3 times per day until her fever breaks and she is looking well again. As I've been told, "that helps to keep it in their blood stream."
It's very important to strip out that quarter as well and as often as you can. Some have suggested splitting up the intermammary treatment to allow for stripping the quarter out more and keeping the product in there longer. The recommendation was
DAY 1: 15-20cc Somaticare in the AM, noon, and PM
DAY2: 15-20cc Somaticare in the AM and noon
This allows you to strip out more frequently and keep the product in there.
Other tips are to supplement with vitamic B and C which help to support the immune system and provide energy. Give your best hay and do whatever you can to keep her eating and drinking. Also, I've read about success just using the excell 7000 which will save you money since you will only need 1 bottle (assuming 1 is enough for you).
If you've never used these products before, you're in for a real surprise.
Wow. Thank you @bkunkel31 ! I really appreciate your quick and thorough response. I will try exactly that and see how things go. I've heard very good things about these products and I'm excited to try them out!
